Joan Marie Urenko, R.N., 95 of Pottsville, formerly of St. Clair. died Friday morning at Providence Place Pottsville.
She was born December 20, 1930, in St. Clair, a daughter of the late Stephen A. and Mary Oler Pingor
She was a graduate of the former St. Clair High School, the former Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing and Bloomsburg University.
Joan devoted her career to nursing, dedicating decades to the well-being of children she served. Before retiring, she worked at the former Pottsville Hospital and the Warne Clinic, as the head nurse of pediatrics. Later in her career Joan continued her calling as a school nurse for the St. Clair Area School District. In that role she became a trusted and caring presence for lives of generations of students.
Joan was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, the former Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, St. Clair, St. Clair Area Teachers Association, PSER, Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Bloomsburg University Alumni Association, American Red Cross Blood Bank, the former Schuylkill Health Ladies Auxiliary, St. Clair Community Historical Society, the former Pottsville Club and its Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen E. Urenko in 2007; 2 sisters, Kathleen A. Moll and Dorothy M. Russek
Surviving are nieces, nephews, and cousins
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11AM Wednesday, at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. Family and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 10:00 a.m. until the time of mass. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The family would prefer remembrances in the form of contributions in memory of Joan be made to: Pottsville Free Public Library 215 W. Market St., Pottsville, PA 17901 or American Red Cross 256 North Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
Arrangements are under the care of James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, James B. Humphrey, F.D. Pottsville.
