Mary V. Messina

Mary V. Messina, 94 of Pottsville, died Sunday night at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian St. She was born March 17, 1920 in Pottsville daughter of the late Dominick and Julia Celani Piccioni Vittemberghi. She was graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School and Kutztown Teachers College. Mary was employed as a school teacher for 38 years in the Pottsville Area School District and was a volunteer in neighborhood school assisting children in need while she resided in Laguna Beach CA, and Las Vegas, NV. Mary was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church and it's Women's Guild. Executive Board member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania PTA, Sons of Italy in America, Pottsville Bicentennial Committee, former board member of the Pottsville Winter Carnival. She was also the Recipient of Friends of Education Award in 2000 from the Schuylkill County Education Association. She was preceded in death by her husband Gaspar Messina, 2 sons, Dr. Dominic Messina, and Christopher Messina: a brother, Harry A. Piccioni; 2 sisters, Jule Moffitt and Esmeralda Adams. Surviving are 4 sister-in-laws, Josephine Messina, Rosalie Gerace, both of Pottsville; Sara Mendini, Charolette, NC; Nancy Messina, Chambersburg: a brother-in-law, Thomas Messina and his wife Marion, Fort Mill, SC. nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. There will be no visitation. Interment will be private in St. Joseph Cemetery.
