Military Funerals and Memorials
For many families of veterans, we thoughtfully create funeral services that reflect and honor the military life of their loved one. Uniforms, medals, service relics, photographs, and tribute videos often become meaningful parts of the visitation or viewing, telling the story of a life dedicated to service.
Veteran funeral services may include military pallbearers at the funeral home, place of worship, and cemetery, depending on the veteran’s eligibility and service status. Graveside services can involve active-duty personnel, retired service members, or local veterans’ honor guards.
Military honors may include:
- A formal flag presentation
- A 21-gun salute (when eligible)
- The ceremonial playing of Taps by military bugler
Each element is coordinated with precision and respect to ensure the veteran receives the honors they have earned.
At the James E. Humphrey Funeral Home, we consider it a privilege to help families in Pottsville and Schuylkill County plan dignified, personalized veteran funerals that properly recognize a lifetime of service and sacrifice.

Our Tribute Begins with the Initial Call
When transporting a known veteran from their place of death, we place military emblems on both sides of our removal vehicle to identify the veteran’s branch of service. This visible tribute serves as an immediate sign of honor and recognition for their service to our country.
It is one of the many ways we show respect from the very first moment a veteran comes into our care.

Branch of Service Flags
From the moment a veteran is in our care, the flag representing their branch of service will proudly fly at our funeral home alongside the Stars and Stripes. The flag remains raised until the day after the veteran’s funeral service — a visible and meaningful tribute to their dedication and sacrifice.

The Funeral Coach
On the day of the service, we further honor the veteran by displaying two American flags on the front of the hearse, along with military emblems on each side identifying the veteran’s branch of service. This tribute is also provided when transporting a veteran from the funeral home to a church for an evening or morning viewing, should the family choose to hold services there. Every detail is thoughtfully arranged to ensure the veteran’s service and sacrifice are visibly recognized with honor and respect.
Service Lapel Pins
On the day of scheduled services, our funeral home staff will wear a lapel pin representing the branch of service in which the veteran served.
This small but meaningful gesture reflects our deep respect and ensures that, throughout the service, the veteran’s military commitment is visibly honored by those entrusted with their care.
Patriot Walk
The final honor takes place at the cemetery, where American flags are respectfully placed to form a walkway from the roadside to the gravesite. As pallbearers carry the casket or urn, they pass through this corridor of flags — a powerful and solemn tribute to a life of service.
Honoring those who gave so much for our country is not just our duty — it is our privilege.

Presidential Memorial Certificate
After the service families will receive the Presidential Memorial Certificate, which acknowledges the service the veteran has made to our country and is signed by the President of the United States. This certificate is a treasured keep sake for many families.

Flag Retirement Program
Our funeral home is the area’s exclusive provider for the Veterans Burial & Cremation Society, further strengthening our commitment to serving the veterans of Pottsville and Schuylkill County. We also proudly participate in a year-round Flag Retirement Program. When a veteran is entrusted to our care for cremation, a donated torn or tattered American flag is respectfully placed with them. This meaningful gesture ensures that worn flags are properly retired while simultaneously honoring a hero who served our country. It is a solemn and symbolic way to unite respect for our nation’s flag with reverence for the veteran. If you have a worn or unserviceable American flag, we invite you to drop it off at our funeral home so it may be properly retired with dignity.
